Meta Keywords
In the early days of SEO, meta keywords were a popular way for website owners to tell search engines what their pages were about. They were a list of relevant keywords included in the webpage’s HTML code, within a meta tag like this:
<meta name=”keywords” content=”keyword1, keyword2, keyword3″>
The idea was that search engines would use these keywords to understand the page’s content and rank it accordingly. However, meta keywords were quickly abused by spammers who would stuff their meta tags with irrelevant keywords in an attempt to manipulate rankings.
Decline of Meta Keywords
As a result of this abuse, major search engines like Google and Bing gradually stopped using meta keywords as a ranking factor. Today, they have little to no impact on SEO. In fact, some SEOs even recommend removing meta keywords tags altogether, as they provide no value and could potentially signal to search engines that you’re using outdated SEO practices.
Alternatives to Meta Keywords
Instead of relying on meta keywords, focus on incorporating relevant keywords naturally into your content, title tags, meta descriptions, and header tags. This provides a more accurate and reliable signal to search engines about your page’s topic and relevance.
Meta Keywords in 2024: A Legacy, Not a Strategy
While meta keywords may hold a nostalgic place in the history of SEO, they are no longer a viable or recommended strategy for improving search rankings. In 2024, SEOs should focus on creating high-quality, informative, and engaging content that naturally incorporates relevant keywords throughout the page. This, along with other on-page and off-page optimization techniques, will be far more effective in achieving long-term SEO success.
